Founded in 1937, CLOG (Central London Outdoor Group) is a friendly group for Londoners who love walking and cycling. We have around 300 members and welcome adults of any age over 18; currently most of us are over 40.

The group is run entirely by its members who organise all events on a voluntary basis. Administration is handled by an elected committee and a small annual membership fee covers basic running costs. This is £10 for new members and £15 for standard renewals. There is no extra charge for individual events.

WHAT WE DO

We organise a variety of outdoor events in London and southeast England, mostly on weekends but also midweek. Walks and cycle rides start from tube or train stations. Our programme includes:

Country walks from 8 to 15 miles, with options suitable for both seasoned hikers and those keen to build up fitness levels or just enjoy the outdoors.

City walks exploring London’s green spaces or historic sights.

Cycle rides at a leisurely pace in small groups, mostly on quiet roads and traffic-free trails, covering between 20 and 35 miles.

Social events including a monthly evening out in central London. Some members arrange events via CLOG WhatsApp groups.

Trips away are also very popular and every year we organise several youth-hostel breaks within the UK. There is also a variety of hotel-based and camping trips, in the UK and Europe, involving walking, cycling and/or sightseeing.

OUR ACTIVITIES

COUNTRY WALKS

Our all-day walks, usually on weekends, offer the chance to get out of London and explore the countryside. Starting from tube or train stations, they range from hilly hikes in the Chilterns, North Downs or South Downs to gentler woodland, riverside or coastal walks. Distances vary from 8 to 15 miles. The leader’s description should give an idea of length, pace, terrain and pub or café stops. We don’t normally limit numbers on day walks, which typically attract between 10 and 20 people. We also offer occasional navigation workshops to encourage new walk leaders.

CITY WALKS

Shorter walks in central or Greater London include evening strolls of up to five miles in spring and summer. Many explore the city’s green spaces, such as Hampstead Heath, Richmond Park or Wimbledon Common, while urban walks may have a cultural or historical theme. If you haven’t walked much before, these relaxed outings may be a good place to start.

CYCLE RIDES

Our easy cycle rides focus on enjoying the countryside and seeking out interesting sights, rather than racing over tarmac. As well as quiet roads and lanes, we explore disused railway tracks, canal and river towpaths and other traffic-free trails suitable for road bikes. Rides start from tube or train stations and range from 20 to 35 miles, allowing time for café or pub stops and visits to landmarks such as forts, castles and churches. Members must book on rides as we limit group size for safety reasons. CLOG is affiliated to Cycling UK and London Cycling Campaign (LCC). CLOG members who wish to join LCC are entitled to a £23 discount on its Individual subscription fee.

SOCIAL EVENTS

As a friendly group, we have an active social programme. Every month we organise an evening event in central London, usually including a picnic in summer, visits to pubs and museums, a quiz night and a Christmas party. We also have several CLOG WhatsApp groups, which members use to arrange other social or cultural events. These include dining-out groups and book, theatre, film and concert clubs.
