About Sutherland Cottage Lodge
Sutherland Cottage Lodge is the brainchild and passion/design project of husband-and-wife team Clive and Tracy Ainley, with their young Daughter Evie and new arrival Jessica.
With backgrounds in IT, property development, and hospitality, the family launched their ambition to create “a woodland escape and haven of tranquility” in the substantial grounds of their own home; to share their own deep love of nature and a landscape that constantly varies and excites:
“Forest View Cropton is our true labour of love. We are blessed to live where we do, with our extended woodland family of wild and domestic animals. We wanted, above everything, to create a special, unique place of tranquility for those who not only appreciate the good and aesthetic things in life but, first and foremost, the natural world. The lodge is our realization of a dream. We hope it is for you too.
We know your pets are part of the family, with this in mind dogs are welcome. Up to 4 dogs depending on size and agreement in place beforehand. There's an additional cost per dog per stay.

Out and About
Walking
Plenty of excellent routes to enjoy from short strolls to the Cleveland Way or the infamous or pick one of the many local routes in Cropton forest, very popular family and dog walking routes. For the more challenging walkers it's up on to the moors to explore just what the National park has to offer. All of which are on your doorstep, so park up at Forest View Cropton and let your boots do the walking.
North Yorkshire Moors Railway
The beautifully restored station dating from 1847 makes a great gateway to this fascinating market town. This magnificent structure was re-instated in 2011 to the same design as the original, built by GT Andrews.
The station itself is a great place to pick up a souvenir or you can pop into the traditional railway tea room serving tasty meals and snacks. For something more luxurious head to Mulberries for an afternoon tea or one of Auntie Wendy’s wickedly delicious cakes.
Monday is market day and a great time to visit but there is always lots to do. Around the corner from the NYMR is Beck Isle Museum, where you can discover the Rosedale Railway plus the heritage, history and culture of life in Pickering. In the summer, visit Pickering Castle and explore this splendid 13th Century site.
Mountain Biking
Mountain biking in the Moors is an experience for everyone. Routes vary from an amble along the Hambleton Hills to full-on world standard routes at Dalby Forest - a venue recently voted as being the world's favorite XC venue. With over 70km of singletrack.
The variety of this area is superb; moorland heather tracks, steep sided valley's, twisting woodland singletrack. Yep, the Moors has it all.
The best location for yourself has got to be Cropton Forest, miles and miles of walks/mountain biking on your doorstep, with the added advantage of been very close to Helmsley, Guisborough, and, of course, Dalby Forest and Pickering. The picture above shows some of the action from a previous mtb XC World Cup event at Dalby. If you want a taste of the action, then get along to the Moors.
